One Year of Keeping it Social.

It's our birthday! March 13, 2010.
It's been a long road over the past year, starting a business in a downward economy, looking for any way to save a buck. I have used social networks personally for several years, building an understanding for their structure and use.
I found myself frequently helping friends, client and colleagues, establish themselves on these networks and the question was constantly raised...How do I track my ROI? That's not the easiest question to answer when there is no real metric to measure. There are pieces of social marketing that may be measured and tracked but how does that give way to leads and money in your pocket?
Seriously considering this question I decided early on, that I would put word of mouth social advertising to the test. My marketing plan only incorporated social media and word of mouth advertising. It hasn't been the easiest, and while the study produce great information for the company, we would not recommend trying to replace a full marketing strategy with just a social media strategy. A social media strategy is just one tool in your over all marketing plan.
Over all from the experience, the social media strategy lead to several interesting projects and clients. It also strengthened out methods of information management and sorting out the information from the noise.
Here are 5 things we did to help extend our brand and build our social media credibility.
  1. Get out there. We don't just talk about interesting things happening, we attend them too. Go to as many networking events and real life social events, make connections. You may not always be talking business but you may find out about new projects or partners just by listening to the general interests of others.
  2. Keep it casual. Yes, we post our blog updates, and invites but rarely go for direct sales pitches. We interact and comment with others in our network.
  3. Stay flexible. Our principal and partners maintain a large variety of skill sets and that allows us to open our options.
  4. Make friends.
  5. Talk...A LOT, about anything you can and help others find each other if you know nothing about certain subjects.
