The Social Media Distraction. One Weapon in Your Marketing Arsenal.
We’ve got over 100 million active social network users in the U.S. right now, and that’s growing about 40% this year. And over 400 million worldwide, on Facebook alone.
Social media can be both a time waster and a distraction. It may not always lend itself to new leads, or help you cross anything off your to do list, but it may waste your time. Why? How?
Like many things social media can be identified as a waste of time, but what can't?
• Reading most websites and books is a waste of time.
• Listening to the radio is a waste of time.
• Watching Television is a waste of time.
• Talking to friends is a waste of time.
• Most of your mail is a waste of time.
Each of these examples is situational and debatable as to weather or not your time is being wasted. From a business and marketing perspective none of the above lead to new business growth, income or finishing a project. But we are constantly bombarded by marketeers biding for our attention through all of these outlets:
• Books, Magazines and Website advertising
• Radio advertising
• TV advertising
• Banded clothing and influential marketing
• Direct mail
Don't you want to engage people when they are wasting their time? If someone is being really productive you can't reach them through most marketing anyway.
Person-to-person and word of mouth engagement is the best way to reach people so reaching them in a more direct manner, over social networks, is one weapon you have in your marketing arsenal.
Figuring out how to leverage social media without wasting your time is the trick, but there is nothing more powerful (word of mouth) once you do, or let us handle it for you.
Social networks don't have to be a waste of time for everyone. You may spend more time working towards a goal, building credibility, establishing relationships and having conversations, but ultimately you are extending yourself and your business. You are creating a DIRECT interaction with the public and that allows your business to REACT DIRECTLY and grow with your clients.

Great article!
It's only a distraction if you let it be one. Social media is a huge tool for bringing people together, business opportunity or not. It's about self-discipline in the end.
Good thoughts, Strat.
Sasha, true, point being, if you're looking at it for marketing, you do indeed want it to continue being a distraction. This is not really in the context of how everyone uses it.
